Celebrate International Day for Biodiversity Day today
Ha Noi - The theme for this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity is “Water and Biodiversity”. Water underpins the health of our ecosystem, and therefore biodiversity. As ecosystems regulate the availability of water, as well as its quality, conservation and restoration are vital activities to ensure water security. Water is life. It underpins our human well-being, including the security of our food, drinking water and sanitation, as well as most of our economic activities.
Viet Nam has made major efforts to conserve biodiversity. However due to illegal and unsustainable exploitation, nearly 900 species are at risk of extinction, and at least 10 have already disappeared from Viet Nam, including the Javan rhino. Viet Nam needs to speed up implementation of its policies and focus on concrete actions, including developing a sustainable financing mechanism for protected areas system and establishing a sub-system of wetland protected areas.
Viet Nam celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity with a number of activities to raise public awareness, including a photo and logo contest and a forum on innovations.

- For nurses and doctors in remote areas, reliable electricity makes the difference between saving a life or losing a life. Solar-powered pre-fab clinics are changing all this and they're cheaper to run and more environmentally friendly: #SE4ALL | #Health4ALL | #GlobalGoals 19 hours ago
- Without daycare or kindergarten in their village, single moms in Georgia are stuck between needing more money than they earn to hire a babysitter or staying at home to watch their children. It's even harder for Lela because her village is next to South Ossetia, where border disputes lead to violence, so babysitters are hard to come by. A daycare and kindergarten has given Lela and other single moms a safe place to leave children while they work: #ShareHumanity | #GlobalGoals | UNDP Georgia Yesterday AT 10:44 PM
