"Women Can Do" photo exhibition Opening

Mar 24, 2017

Hanoi, March 24, 2017 – Inspired by #HowAbnormal campaign jointly organized by Viet Nam’s Student Newspaper and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) with the support of Arena Multimedia, the photo exhibition “Women Can Do” is to abolish gender stereotypes that are putting both women and men in certain ways of being, thus hampering their ability to fully realize their potentials. The exhibition opening  launches at 5:00 PM, Friday March 24, 2017 at Vietnam Women’s Academy, 68 Nguyen Chi Thanh Street, Hanoi and ends on April 10, 2017. A great many of celebrities such as actor Việtt Anh, actor Bình An, singer Đặng Tuấn Phương and MC Hoàng Anh Duy will participate in this show.

“Women Can Do” was previously presented at Green One UN House.

The four women characterized in the exhibition are doing jobs that are traditionally seen as men’s jobs only. They are Ms. Mai Trang Thanh, President at Honeywell Indochina; Ms. Nguyen Ly Huong, the first female pilot in Vietnam; Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung, footballer of Vietnam’s National Female Football Team and winner of  Vietnam’s 2014 Golden Ball; and Ms. Chu Thi Nhung, an outstanding student at the University of Fire Fighting & Prevention.

The exhibition author is also a woman: journalist Nguyen Thi Quynh Hoa is currently the image director and event manager of Vietnam’s Student Newspaper. She was the director of a series of 13 events in the Youth Festival #HowAbnormal Deconstructing Gender Stereotypes as part of #HowAbnormal campaign that was organized in various major universities nationwide in 2016. Ms. Hoa majored in Photography at Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema. Before joining Vietnam’s Student Newspaper, she had worked for Vietnam News Agency and Vietnam Television Magazine.

UNDP Viet Nam Deputy Country Director, Ms. Akiko Fujii commended Quynh Hoa for developing the brilliant “Women can do” photo concept and her dedication in carrying out this idea. “I really love the ‘Women Can Do’ photos,” Ms. Fujii said. “This is exactly what #HowAbnormal campaign is all about – we hope to inspire people like Quynh Hoa to take action to reach their full potential. Breaking negative gender norms means no one will be held back by stereotypes and expectations by others on how people think we should behave, being a woman or a man”.

The photo exhibition is supported by Vietnam’s Student Newspaper, UNDP, Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam’s Football Federation, the University of Fire Fighting & Prevention, and Arena Multimedia, a multimedia training center.

The exhibition is scheduled to be displayed in different foreign culture centers and universities in Vietnam throughout 2017.
