New initiative for SDG impact and sustainable businesses

Jul 12, 2017

Ha Noi 12 July 2017 – The UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Viet Nam and HATCH! VENTURES announced today the SDG Challenge 2017 - a competition and acceleration program to encourage young people to develop and innovate business solutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SDG Challenge 2017 aims to find innovative business ideas with global scalability and high social impact to realize SDGs. Present at the launching event were young entrepreneurs, representatives of 2030 Youth Force in Viet Nam, private sector partners and the media. Leaders from UNDP Viet Nam, HATCH! VENTURES and partners provided information about the SDGs and its approach through an interactive discussion and case study presentation.

Addressing the launching event, Ms Akiko Fujii, UNDP Deputy Country Director in Viet Nam, highlighted that UNDP promoted innovation, a whole-of-society approach and more prominent roles for women and youth to help deliver the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals.  “UNDP wants to tap into the thriving start-up scene in Viet Nam and start a conversation with young and ambitious entrepreneurs about the double bottom line: SDG impact and sustainable business,” she said.

The Competition will be held in three big innovation and entrepreneurial cities in Viet Nam - Ha Noi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. The Final Selection Round will take place in HCMC on 28 October 2017 in HATCH! FAIR the Fifth. The winning teams will receive an integrated acceleration program from 4 to 6 months with Seed-funding; Acceleration service; and Professional workshops to provide continuous support to the development of the selected businesses.

Sharing about the follow up activities with the winners after the competition, Mr. Pham Quoc Dat, Founder and Director, HATCH! VENTURES, said: “We emphasize and focus on the sustainability of a business, and that is why we have developed an acceleration program to provide continuous business support for the best innovations to be sustainably implemented and contribute to achieving the SDGs.
