A closing ceremony for a dioxin-contaminated soil landfill will be jointly held tomorrow (August 18) at the Phu Cat airbase by the Office of National Steering Committee on Overcoming of the Consequences of Toxic Chemicals used by US during the war in Viet Nam (Office 33)/ Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and UNDP Viet Nam Country Office. Completion of the landfill removes the Phu Cat airbase from the list of dioxin hotspot in Viet Nam.

In results from a nationwide survey launched today, Quang Binh, Ba Ria Vung Tau and Long An are assessed by their citizens as three of Viet Nam’s top-performing provinces in terms of governance and public administration. Long An in the Mekong Delta is the only province that is systematically ranked at the top of all six governance dimensions measured in the survey.

Urgent international action needed to combat social inequalities and environmental risks, UN Secretary-General tells Istanbul Forum
Social justice and environmental protection are equally urgent and intrinsically linked universal goals, with coordinated global action needed on both fronts at the UN’s ‘Rio+20’ Conference on Sustainable Development in June, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a message to an audience of development experts, civil society leaders and government officials at the first Global Human Development Forum here today.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at Phu Cat airbase this morning for a 5,400 cubic meter contained landfill site which will be used to isolate the dioxin contamination at the airbase.

2011 Viet Nam Human Development Report: Economic growth driving Viet Nam’s human development progress, more emphasis needed on health and education
Economic growth has been the major driver of Viet Nam’s human development progress, says a new report released today by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Viet Nam. According to the report, Viet Nam’s Human Development Index (HDI) has risen 11.8 percent between 1999 and 2008.

Results of a survey by VietNamNet and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), released today, show that in order to increase the satisfaction with public administrative procedures three areas in particular need to be improved. These are: (i) completing procedures within the stated deadline; (ii) improving the competence and attitude of civil servants; and (iii) providing clear information about the procedures.
