The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched, today, an extensive assessment of what must be done to advance sustainable development and reduce global poverty. The report, titled What Will It Take To Achieve The Millennium Development Goals? An International Assessment, identifies a concrete action agenda to inform the outcome of the World leaders’ MDG Summit in New York, this September.

Governments, donors and United Nations keep up momentum towards Delivering as One at Global Conference in Viet Nam
After three working days, the "High Level Tripartite Conference on Delivering as One: Lessons from Country-led Evaluation and Way Forward“ has been a success. “This High-level Tripartite Conference demonstrated he realized outcome strong partnership among the Government, the United Nations and the donor community”. Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc noted.

UNDP Chief hails Viet Nam’s progress on the millennium goals; says environmental issues could be addressed through cleaner energy use
On the second day of her official visit to Viet Nam, UNDP Administrator Helen Clark visited Bat Trang village, an ancient center for ceramics, to encourage the use of cleaner energy in their kilns. UNDP supports a project which provides short term loans to business owners to switch from coal fired kilns to cleaner gas, significantly reducing CO2 emission and saving energy.

Vietnamese women are an increasingly active role in socio– economic development. They make up around 50% of labour market, of which nearly half are skilled workers in various sectors. Viet Nam is already a medium 'Human Development Index’ (HDI) country according to the UNDP’s global system of indicators, and in terms of gender empowerment is ranked higher than some high HDI countries.

First of a kind survey asks Vietnamese citizens about their experiences with public administrative procedures
VietNamNet and UNDP Viet Nam are today launching the first-ever online public poll on Vietnamese citizens’ views and experiences of public administrative procedures (www.hienkecchc.vn). The survey, which runs for three months, aims to support the ongoing Government efforts to enhance public administration reform and simplification of administrative procedures.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with Olympus Corporation and the Agence France-Presse (AFP) Foundation, launched the second annual Picture This photo contest today in Johannesburg, South Africa. The contest, titled Picture This: We Can End Poverty, seeks to show the inspirational work that is being done in many countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight goals agreed on by world leaders to halve extreme poverty by 2015.

New EUR 1.17 million anti-corruption project signed: Partnership between UNDP, UNODC, European Commission and Government Inspectorate
A new project to strengthen the capacity of the Government Inspectorate and Government of Viet Nam to monitor and report on corruption was launched today in Ha Noi. The EUR 1.17 million project will start in November and will run for four years. It is a partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the European Commission and the Government Inspectorate.

United Nations and VASS call for migration to be included in national and human development strategies
At a workshop on migration held today in Ha Noi, the Viet Nam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) and the United Nations in Viet Nam made a call for both the benefits and costs of migration to be reflected in Viet Nam’s national development strategies and plans. This will enable the country to maximize the full potential of migration while reducing the vulnerability that some migrants and their families face.

The latest draft of Viet Nam’s first-ever Biodiversity Law was shared this morning at a meeting jointly organised by the National Assembly’s Committee of Science, Technology and Environment and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The revised draft law integrates pro-poor principles, recognizing that biodiversity conservation and development cannot be successful without participation of local communities.
