Support to knowledge management and policy dialogue through the partnership on avian and pandemic influenza (KMP-API)

Avian influenza viruses of the H5N1 subtype emerged as a serious cause of disease in poultry and humans in Viet Nam in late 2003. The response activities undertaken over the past five years have been guided by the first National Integrated Operational Program for Avian and Human Influenza (OPI), 2006-2010.

UNDP has taken an active role in coordinating donors‘ support to National Integrated Operational Program for Avian and Human Influenza, 2006-2010, particularly through successful implementation of Avian Influenza Joint Programme 2007-2011 and International Ministerial Conference on Animal and Pandemic Influenza (IMCAPI) in April 2010.

To follow on from the OPI, the Government of Viet Nam has worked closely with international partners to develop the Integrated National Operational Program on Avian Influenza, Pandemic Preparedness and Emerging Infectious Diseases (AIPED) 2011-2015. The AIPED aims to sustain the national response to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and to continue to strengthen pandemic preparedness, while beginning to expand the focus of activities to include other infectious disease threats arising at the human-animal-ecosystems interface, applying a One Health approach.
Under IMCAPI project fully funded by USAID, UNDP has provided support to Partnership on Avian and Human Influenza (PAHI) secretariat to facilitate consultant inputs and support the national drafting team to develop the AIPED.

This KMP-API project will provide support for launching the AIPED 2011-2015 and will play a lead role in Avian and Pandemic Influenza (API) knowledge management and policy dialogue between national and international partners and their activities within the framework of AIPED, through the Partnership on Avian and Human Influenza (PAHI).

What are the project's key results?

1. A Launching and inception of the AIPED 2011-2015;
2. Enhancing API knowledge management and policy dialogue;
3. Support to personnel and operations for KMP-API
