Consultation Workshop on Circular Economy Policies and the Viet Nam Circular Economy Hub

Closing Remarks by Mr. Patrick Haverman, UNDP Viet Nam Deputy Resident Representative

October 6, 2021

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of UNDP, allow me to extend to all of you our appreciation for joining us in this Consultation Workshop on Circular Economy Policies and the Viet Nam Circular Economy Hub. This afternoon, we had the honour to listen to a number of presentations and discussions from our partners, who shared their experiences and perspectives. Let me highlight some take-away from today’s discussions.

Firstly, it is clear that the current linear economy is deteriorating the very foundations of our economy, our people's health, livelihoods, and quality of life. Together, we need to frame a collective vision and direction for the Circular Economy that is inclusive and fair. We should think about Circular Economy as a direction we aim to achieve to preserve the planetary boundaries, one that addresses the needs of our people and those of the futures generations

Secondly, partnerships will be critical if we are to achieve the transition toward a Circular Economy. We must consistently bridge the gap between consumers and producers, SMEs and finance organisations, research institutions and ministries, and all actors within value chains. We will continue to provide a space for industries and government entities to discuss and design an enabling environment for Circular Economy solutions to emerge.

We have heard from many stakeholders that Viet Nam, as a consumption and production powerhouse, has the potential to showcase the circular economy at scale. Viet Nam can continue building on traditional knowledge and practices, investing in education and capacity building activities, and helping communities-led solutions to scale-up, while formulating policies and incentive mechanisms.

Distinguished guests,

We foresee a huge opportunity for Viet Nam to leapfrog the unsustainable linear economy and become a driver of Circular Economy in the ASEAN region. UNDP stands ready to support MONRE and the Government in embarking on this paradigm shift towards a green and prosperous Viet Nam.

In closing, allow me to express my gratitude to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment for hosting this consultation event. My sincere thanks to the Norwegian Government and all partners for their support in accelerating the transition towards a Circular Economy.

Thank you all once again for your attendance, I wish you all good health, happiness, and success.

Thank you! Xin cảm ơn!
